SCADA: Why Trust a SCADA Member for Your Auto Recycling

SCADA: The State of California Auto Dismantlers Association

The State of California Auto Dismantlers Association, also known as SCADA, was founded over 50 years ago to license auto dismantlers, educate them, and help consumers. Currently, SCADA has 200 members. Why is membership in this trade association so vital?

Whether you’re purchasing a used auto part, trying to restore a broken component, or simply searching for a trustworthy, reputable company to consult regarding your auto problems, you should care about SCADA “bona fides.”

Approximately 1.3 million vehicles are declared total losses or otherwise abandoned every year in the state of California. What should be done with these “end of life vehicles” (a.k.a ELVs)? They could end up abandoned, rotting on a lawn, causing pollution. Or… a SCADA member could dismantle them, extract and recycle fluids and components, and ensure environmental stewardship. According to the official SCADA website, when fluids and reusable parts are “removed, cleaned, catalogued and stored,” they can then be “sold to repair other cars at a savings of up to 80% over the cost of new parts.” Recyclables can create new products.

SCADA is not just interested in helping members. It’s also keen on protecting the environment and consumers. The organization recently sponsored a piece of legislation, AB 805, that ensures that any company licensed to operate an auto dismantling business in California must meet stringent tax and environmental protection requirements.
